Glenn T. Stanton Attempts to Explain Why Gender and Sex are the Same Thing

Mazel tov with that pursuit.

Glenn T. Stanton (Focus on the Family) has written: Why Sex And Gender Are Not Two Different Things. The subtitle of this brilliant intellectual exploration reads:
It cannot be stated strongly enough. There is no, not one, not even a wisp of a scientific discovery that requires we now understand sex and gender as two different things.
Mr. Stanton is a scientific poseur. The truth is that he disapproves of transgender people. He does so because the existence of transgender people creates a conflict with scripture; specifically Genesis 1:27. Were sex and gender the same thing there would be no such thing as gender dysphoria. In the absence of gender dysphoria, there would be no transgender people since they exist to mitigate the misery that the condition causes.

I did a quick search at JAMA Network (Journals of the American Medical Association). JAMA publishes what are arguably the most rigorously peer reviewed academic journals in the field of medical science. The first result from my search yielded: Endocrine Treatment of Gender-Dysphoric/Gender-Incongruent Persons. It is dated October 17, 2017. It appeared in JAMA: Adolescent Health. According to the article:
Transgender individuals have a gender identity that does not align with their sex assignment at birth (gender incongruence). They account for about approximately 0.4% of the US population (1 million people).1 Some transgender people experience gender dysphoria, distress caused by the discrepancy between gender identity and birth-assigned sex …
There is one of many examples of “scientific discovery that requires we now understand sex and gender as two different things.” It was published to one of the most prestigious academic medical journals in the world and subjected to robust peer review. In other words, Glenn T. Stanton is full of crap.

The American Psychiatric Association publishes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — now the DSM-5. The DSM is edited in a manner comparable to peer review. DSM-5’s Task Force and 13 Work Groups included more than 160 mental health and medical professionals who are leaders in their respective fields.

DSM-5 provides very specific criteria for the diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Moreover, according to the APA:
Gender dysphoria involves a conflict between a person's physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify. People with gender dysphoria may be very uncomfortable with the gender they were assigned, sometimes described as being uncomfortable with their body (particularly developments during puberty) or being uncomfortable with the expected roles of their assigned gender.
Therefore, according to medical science, the condition exists. That also requires an understanding that sex and gender are separate constructs. Nevertheless, Stanton writes:
Ideology, Not Science, Asserts the Change

It cannot be stated strongly enough. There is no, not one, not even a wisp of a scientific discovery that requires we now understand sex and gender as two different things. It is based purely in ideology stemming from a wish for how these people think reality ought to be. It is 100 percent sophistry, 0 percent science.
It is not just domestic science. Consider this article: Treatment Experiences and Social Support in Individuals with Gender Incongruence/Gender Dysphoria - A ENIGI 5 Year Follow-Up Study in Three European Countries. This is a 2019 papert in Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik, Medizinische Psychologie which is a peer-reviewed German language academic journal:
Gender Dysphoria (GD) refers to a distress resulting from an incongruence between the individual's sex characteristics and the experience of their gender (Gender Incongruence, GI).
If gender and natal sex are incongruent then an understanding that sex and gender are separate constructs is required.

Glenn T. Stanton required more than 2,500 words to attempt to explain away the science as merely linguistics. It is nonsense inspired by religious disapproval. The science is clear and unambiguous:
  1. Gender dysphoria or gender incongruence is a condition that is well known in medical science.
  2. Gender dysphoria occurs when individuals experience a difference between natal sex and their gender identity.
  3. Therefore, medical science recognizes that sex and gender are two different things.
  4. Treating the condition requires gender affirmation because gender and sex are two different things.
Attempting to conform science to religious dogma never works.
